The golden rule: blot, don't rub
Rubbing pushes pigment deeper and frays fibres. Always blot with a clean white cloth from the outside of the spill inward.
The 5 quick-fix recipes
Keep a small caddy near the pantry with these five items — soda water, dish soap, white vinegar, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
- Red wine: soda water + gentle blot, then baking-soda paste
- Coffee: cool water + a drop of dish soap
- Curry / turmeric: dab with vinegar solution, then rinse
- Pet urine: enzymatic cleaner, never ammonia
- Ink: isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud
